Nara is a wonderful, short day trip from Osaka. You can feed the sacred bowing deer, visit a gargantuan Buddha statue, and wander through an overwhelming number of gardens and shrines. The Isui-en garden (pictured here) is one of my favorites. The garden also has a small museum, a traditional teahouse, and a number of vistas that will leave you speechless.
