Photo by @babaktafreshi I felt an incredible connection to the history and culture of this far north land when the dazzling, dancing rays of the aurora borealis appeared over a Viking village on this late September midnight. This is where some of the earliest Nordic settlers lived in Iceland a thousand years ago. They were unaware that a nearby snowcapped mountain was (and remains) an active volcano. In 1104 a massive eruption ended life in the farming village. The replica turf houses were constructed near the original site, based on archaeological findings.
