Photo by @francescolastrucci A view of the Sassi at night in Matera, Italy. Matera’s core is the Sassi, hundreds of caves once used as dwellings and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They hold evidence of human settlements starting from the Paleolithic period and without interruption to the present day. More recently, after a period of decline, adventurous artists began moving back, and the recent history of the Sassi is precisely that of an awakening. Caves began being restored and turned into more comfortable houses, unique hotels, restaurants, and galleries. The city came back to life to the point that it was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in 2019.
