Photo by @daisygilardini During a recent trip to South Africa, I found it funny to watch this lion cub going through an identity crisis. The lion was playing with a stick as though it were a dog instead of a big cat.
Lions are listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated 20,000 to 39,000 wild lions left. They are facing a number of threats, from habitat loss and fragmentation—due to residential development and consequent increase of land set aside for farming—to hunting, human conflict, and pollution. According to the WWF, the total population has decreased by over 40 percent in just three generations.
