Photo by Michael Yamashita @Michael Yamashita These are the Komuso, mendicant monks from a sect of Zen Buddhism characterized by their beehive basket (tengai) head coverings and playing the shakuhachi. The idea was that by wearing such a hat they removed their ego. The blowing of the bamboo flute was a form of meditation emphasizing precise breathing control, played in tune to the monks' footsteps as they roamed the countryside on pilgrimages in search of enlightenment. They were a common sight on roadways in the Edo period of Japan and are experiencing a resurgence today. #monks #buddhists #Komuso #ZenBuddhism #Japan
