Matera’s core is the Sassi, hundreds of caves once used as dwellings and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The impoverished inhabitants of the Sassi had been twice relocated from their ancient houses to safer modern neighborhoods until the historic center of the town was completely emptied. Finally, about two decades ago,
adventurous artists began moving back, and the recent history of the Sassi of Matera is precisely that of an awakening. Caves began being restored and turned into more comfortable houses, unique hotels, restaurants, and galleries. Matera was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in 2019.
