Christopher Wood’s untimely death aged thirty has made him one of the most enigmatic figures of 20th Century British art, a tragic talent. Having fled suburban England for the hedonism of 1920s Paris, Wood was nonetheless susceptible to the allure of the rural idyll. These two divergent strands of the artist’s life synthesised when he discovered Tréboul in Brittany in the summer of 1929, and this work from the following year is a distillation of his love for the wild, romantic landscape.

Set to make its auction debut in our pioneering cross-category Evening Sale on 28 July, it is currently on view in our London galleries on New Bond Street.*
