We bought a house last week and have been moving in since.

This is our house.

I don’t even know where to begin. My brain is still spinning, and there’s so much to process. We’re no longer living on the road and we’re no longer living in a tiny Airstream.

We have lived on the road or in a temporary location for the last five years, and we were so ready to put down roots. It was time for all three of us.

In so many ways, our family needed to…expand. *I* needed to expand.

There are so many reasons that we bought a house, and while I might share them all eventually, what matters is that we are right where we want to be. We were so ready for this, and when we found this house, we knew it was the one.

This house was built the 1800s, but in the eighties, a painter and a ceramicist bought it and opened it up, expanding out the walls and turning porches into light-filled spaces. In the years since, other artists and writers have lived in these walls. In the studio, where our Airstream is now housed, we found the places where canvases were stacked and set to dry or where the kiln must have once been.

We have spent so many years building homes for other people, an expression of our hearts. For us, these homes are one of our art forms, the combining of me and Ellen’s talents and gifts and labor into a finished, livable artwork. This house, in its current form, was created by artists…who most certainly, when leaving it, hoped that others would appreciate what they had crafted and built by hand.

We know, firsthand, how meaningful it is to have the things you build and create and pour yourselves into be treated with care, to be honored, to be deeply appreciated. In our time living in this artist’s house, we will do this very thing.

We will honor it, care for it, and appreciate the hands and hearts that created it. It feels so fitting, so very right, to be in this house, not any house, but this one...the artist’s house.

I will share more of our settling down story another day…but for now, we’re here. We’re waking each morning in absolute gratitude, watching the sun come up through our bedroom window.
