A few years ago, we were taking a family walk on this trail near our home, in this exact spot, between the limestone rocks, when a tiny man wearing a striped long-sleeve tee and round spectacles sailed past us on his bicycle. As he passed, he half-sang to us, “I call this…Le Petit Canyon” and he said canyon like can-yone.

He pedaled away and we looked at each other and then at the rocks and burst out laughing in the way you do when you know you’ve just had a human connection so true and sweet and real you’ll not soon forget it.

And we haven’t. I think of that man, and that moment, every time I take a walk or run on this trail.

Anyway, here is Le Petit Canyon in autumn, looking especially lovely.
