I was living with my dear friend @bethrodden and her husband @randypuro in Berkeley when Beth (6 months pregnant then) suggested Randy and I climb the Freeblast together because neither of us had. I didn’t know what the Freeblast was, or that it was even on El Cap. But I trusted that Beth had our best interests at heart 😆- 2 trad gumbies who had never climbed anything like that before 🧐. I was entirely new to granite while Randy was a total granite wizard (repeating/putting up some of the hardest boulder problems in the Valley) but he never ventured that high off ground. It’s safe to say we were both incredibly green. We got an early start and slowly inched our way up the slick, insecure climbing. I was terrified but Randy instilled confidence in me with his quietly calm but encouraging demeanor. I fell on the first slab pitch and he whipped on the 11b roof traverse - both of us a bit stunned and confused by how foreign and difficult it all felt. We reached Mammoth Terraces just before dark and cautiously made our way down Heart Ledges in the darkness. We arrived on the ground completely exhausted but stoked. It felt like a full value day. I remember waking up the next morning more sore than I’d been from any day of climbing prior. It’s funny to think that I managed to pull off a free ascent of El Cap the following year and last year I climbed the Freeblast in under 2 hours with @alexhonnold. I’m pretty proud of that progression, but on the other side seeing this first photo and thinking of this past November - where I wound up laying in a crumpled bloody heap in almost the very same spot after a costly mistake makes me realize that El Cap can feel just as slick, insecure, and intimidating as it was that very first time. I was lucky this time, and I learned something, but I wonder what it will be like when I finally get to revisit that spot. I hope it’s soon. But if not, there’s plenty of mental preparation to do before that moment comes. #neverstopexploring @thenorthface @petzl_official @lasportivana」4月7日 3時26分 - emilyaharrington
