Starting a new thing: #RequiredRewind because most of us are stuck at home & let’s be real: Those home workouts are gonna start to get stale 😆....It’s kind of fun to have some memories to look back on and inspire that future dreaming process. Right???? This one is from fall 2014: @ザ・ノースフェイス/ @ナショナルジオグラフィック expedition to Myanmar to attempt to measure and climb the tallest peak - Hkakabo Razi. So many untold stories from this journey: the death train 🚂, the arms dealer 🔫, missing climbers, a helicopter crash 🚁, “town arrest”, motorcycles 🏍, 125 miles in the jungle, intense heat 🔥, intense cold 🥶, intense wind 💨, running out of food, snakes 🐍 , the list goes on.... This photo is from the end when we finally emerged from the jungle and knew were were headed home. Ragged, depleted, drained, empty. That’s how I remember feeling. But also full to the brim with experience. The ironic thing about that trip looking back is that we didn’t do anything remarkable. Nothing was really accomplished. But a lot happened. We visited a place that seemed frozen in time. We took a wild journey on foot through dense jungle all the way to over 18,000ft in the Himalaya. We failed to climb a mountain. We felt what it was like to truly be hungry. We had the tiniest taste of how many people in the world live. We battled eachother as teammates, made up, battled again. Personalities clashed. And then we came home.
It was a trip that felt like it would never end. A lot of it was completely miserable. I was homesick most of the time. But looking back I remember only the good stuff. The perfectly clear clean water you could drink anywhere without purifying. The fried cashews we rarely got to have but tasted better than any food I’ve ever eaten. Sleeping soundly on the floors of families’ homes in villages during our weeks of walking through the jungle. The rugged isolation of those peaks - the very edge of the Himalaya but seemingly forgotten by the rest of the world.
I’ll keep posting more stories from this journey and others in the coming weeks. Until then, dream on and #neverstopexploring // @hilareenelson // @taylorfreesolo // @renan_ozturk // @Cory Richards // #MyanmarClimb //
