Okawa City is a representative furniture manufacturing neighbourhood in Fukuoka Prefecture. Okawa Kumiko, which was named after the brand Okawa Furniture, takes pride in its over 400-year history.
Kumiko, or "muntin joiner" in Japanese, is a craft which puts wooden pieces together without using any adhesive or nails. With more than 200 patterns and deigns, the wooden artworks are used in various ways, such as making daily goods, tableware and furniture. To make your own piece of wooden artwork, head to Okawa Woodwork Museum at which you can take part in a hands-on Kumiko experience.
