Caught the final show of the @sglyricopera's performance of Bizet's Carmen last night at the Esplanade.
It was a very good show – beautiful sets, excellent singing and orchestra, and of course a popular opera with catchy and familiar tunes. Many of the lead singers were Singaporean, including several graduates of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at NUS.
On a related note, I was delighted to read about the @singaporechineseorchestra’s successful opening night in their ongoing four-city European tour. The SCO is bringing their unique Chinese and Nanyang interpretations to a receptive Western audience, and flying the Singapore flag high.
As a small and young immigrant nation, we lack the deep cultural and historical roots of far older civilisations. But our arts and culture scene is vibrant and thriving, and I hope that our appreciation for the arts will deepen and grow with time. – LHL (Photo by me)
