They change color to match the plants, animals, and other surfaces around them. Only recently, scientists discovered that their bodies are also fluorescent, glowing soft red, with green around the eyes. Like other colors found in nature, fluorescent colors can help animals stand out or blend in—but only for those whose eyes are equipped to see their glowing light. In deeper waters, most fish are attuned to light in the blue-green part of the spectrum and can’t see red light. So at certain depths, a red fluorescent fish only looks bright to a select few.
