But how did scientists and artists accurately observe the ocean floor in the 1920s? The crew used an ingenious “submarine tube” that stretched down accordion-like from beneath a boat to a glass-fronted chamber. Members of the expedition team could sit in the chamber taking still pictures and movies of the reef and sketching the corals and their colors from life. Underwater scenes were also recorded with cameras in water-tight boxes—and even painted in oils by an artist who dove to capture the truest details. See this diorama in Museum’s Hall of Ocean Life!
