The Barred Owl (Strix varia) wants to know who cooks for you…or at least that’s what its call sounds like to some observers! Some say this owl’s rich baritone hoot sounds like it’s asking forest-dwellers, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” But that’s not all—it has a variety of sounds in its arsenal, another of which has been compared to maniacal laughter. This owl has a wide range across eastern North America, as well as parts of the west, and can be found deep in mature forests.
