Behold the Museum’s iconic blue whale! This Throwback Thursday, let’s take a look at its history: When the Museum redesigned the Hall of Ocean Life in anticipation of its 100th anniversary in 1969, artist Richard Ellis was tapped to design the new life-sized blue whale model. But the first photographs of living whales underwater weren’t taken until the mid-1970s. So Ellis had to rely on eyewitness descriptions—and extrapolate from photos or casts of whale corpses. The very last detail added to the model? Twenty-eight tiny hairs on the whale’s chin. But the preparators forgot the belly button—that wasn’t added until the hall was renovated again in 2003. Visit the Museum to see this 21,000-pound work of natural history art! #TBT #AMNH150

The blue whale is the largest animal to ever exist. Nearly 2x as heavy as the largest dinosaurs, eyes the sizes of basketballs, hearts the size of a Corolla. At ≈10ft long, males have nature’s largest penises, and even tho @AMNH’s whale is a female, she’s still pretty well hung.

One of my favorite exhibits growing up. Not to mention the squid and the whale. Elephants in the hall of mammals and the most fascinating the giant centipede. I could observe that exhibit for hours and not tire.

The skeleton of a blue whale hangs in the Baltimore Aquarium in Maryland. Seeing the 5 “fingers” & “toes” where the fins would be helped remind me that they are mammals just like us!

I remember my mom brought me here when I was a child, between 7-10. Seeing the whale blew me away. I couldn’t comprehend how something so big and heavy could hank from the ceiling.
