Hoo’s this? Meet the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus). The elusive bird has a wide range across North American forests, but populations also exist in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Long ears, a slender body, and mottled brown coloration blend the owl in with tree branches. This helps it stay concealed from predators such as larger owls, hawks, or raccoons. When it’s on the hunt itself, this owl uses its sharp sense of hearing and sight to snatch small mammals or small birds—and it can do so in total darkness.
