thephotosocietyさんのインスタグラム写真 - (thephotosocietyInstagram)「Photo by @lucianocandisani (Luciano Candisani). This picture of a 83 years old lady with an octopus is part of my new exhibition "Haenyeo: Women of the Sea”, opening August 31th at 10am in MIS (Sound and Image Museum), São Paulo, Brazil. It’s about the women divers of Jeju island, South Korea, a 400 years old cultural tradition of sustainable extractivism included in the UNESCO list of Humanity intangible cultural heritage. Most of the 4500 remaining Haenyeo are between 65 and 90 years old that still free dive up to 15 meters below the surface to gather seafood. They are notoriously capable to read the signs of their working environment. When I got this picture, the lady was already swimming back to the beach, when she suddenly halted and her head kept looking downwards. She saw something among the seabed rocks; it was approximately three meters deep. I also stopped. In a split second, she took a deep breath and submerged, carrying her hook. She came down steadfastly toward something I was failing to discern. I went back, in time to see the moment when, in a single blow, she snatched an octopus, from a crack in the rocks. It was a big one, and it came out wrapped among billows of ink, an unsuccessful attempt of self-defense at that point. I made this photograph at the end of the struggle, on the surface, when the octopus was on its way to the bag. All of this did not take more than two minutes to happen. . @ilcp_photographers @natgeo @#lucianocandisani #candisani #haenyeo #divers#brazil #underwaterphotography #photography #wildlife #southkorea #jeju #jejuisland #culture」8月11日 6時21分 - thephotosociety
