It means “the big island”, it was founded in 1773 and has approximately 860 residents plus another 35 in Kangerluk, the island’s only village. Qeqertarsuaq houses the Arctic Station, the oldest continuously manned station in the Arctic. Greenland’s ice sheet is experiencing one of its biggest melting events on record, losing some 11 billion tons of ice in a 24-hour period after Earth’s hottest June and July in recorded history. #greenland #diskoisland
