Photo by @pablocorralvega // A polylepis grove at 15.000 feet of altitude in the Cayambe Coca Reserve, in Ecuador. Polylepis (meaning many layers) are very slow growth trees. An inch growth (in diameter) of these unique trees can take a 100 years, so the ones that we are seeing in this photograph can easily be 600 or 700 years old. They grow only at very high altitudes in the Northern Andes of Ecuador, and as many other forests they are in danger because they are still being used for cooking, and the agricultural frontier doesn’t stop expanding. #Ecuador #Andes #Forest #Landscape #River #Water
