Dance of angels on the Cheleken Peninsula I was on assignment for National Geographic on the Caspian Sea. A wanderer like Ulysses or Sinbad, I circled the Caspian Sea for nine months, passing through Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia to arrive at Turkmenistan, my final destination. In each place, I made an effort to understand the country, its economy, its people and their history, their traditions, their daily lives, their joys, their sufferings, and their expectations. Turkmenistan is known for its famous breed of horses, the Akhal Teke, and for its folklore. The country is rich in gas, most of it found in the Cheleken Peninsula. I had reached the small town of Cheleken. At the edge of town, a wide, arid plain yielded to the blue vastness of the Caspian Sea. Two graceful, free-spirited “angels” appeared in front of me. The girls were dancing in the breeze and playing with the puffs of wind. They belonged to a folk company that performed great scenes from Turkmen history and were rehearsing with their troupe. At the moment, they personified the angels in a traditional dance about evil spirits. Curious, I asked what the evil spirits were. The troupe leader pointed to the black smoke in the distance. “Look at that smoke,” he said. “It’s constantly hovering over our beautiful Eden. That is our bad spirit. The oil is being burned to make car tires.
