First was the bone scan, as that’s often the first place cancer travels after it metastasizes from the lymph nodes. Then 2 MRI breast biopsies, two more CTs - abdomen, lungs - and another CT days later after I feel shortness of breath and pain following my port-implant surgery. Nope, not a clot. Just Cancer-Related Acute Panic, Obvi™. One last PET scan (just to be sure it’s not in my brain, of course!) and I’m just a few roentgens away from developing a Chernobyl-like glow.
On a positive note, it was a relief to see Bob looked rather contained. No brain spots. No liver spots. The doctors spotted a few indeterminate lesions on my pelvis and a small nodule on my lung but “nothing suspicious.” Follow-up in September post chemo. TBD.
Needless to say, the process has been eye opening. We can spit in a test tube and sequence DNA, but finding cancer is still just as good as “feeling for a lump” unless you spot it early with a scan. And the only difference between remission and reoccurrence is (you guessed it) ....a scan. After spending the last three years immersed in AI and neurotech, I guess I expected cancer detection to be a bit more....I don’t know, precise? Alas.

Thankfully my insurance has picked up the majority of the ridiculous diagnostic bills (you don’t want to know); and all the thoughts, prayers, trinkets, meditations, pragmatic advice, stories and other forms of spiritual/non-spiritual currency from friends & internet friends alike are accepted whole-heartedly and with deep gratitude...

For long MRIs (well, all MRIs, really) I’ve found edible cannabis plus a huuuuuuge drag (or 3) off my vape pen in the changing room makes for an awesome, often psychedelic, experience in there. I’ve legitimately had some transformative moments in those machines. And I’ll see your radiation with my 10 doses of macrocyclic gadolinium in a 2 year span 😳 (and I had to fight for macrocyclic vs linear - because apparently the US is a few steps behind everyone else). Thinking of you girl. 💜

I can't help but wonder how a regular person with not much money or insurance could possibly get this level of care. Thankfully you are in a position where you can have all this done.
