The juvenile, called a pangopup, was only 70 days old when this photo was taken and was the first of her species to be bred in captivity in the U.S.. Pangopups rely on their mother’s milk for the first several months of life and will catch a ride on mom’s tail whenever possible. With a strong maternal instinct, pangolin moms will ball themselves up around their baby when danger is near to shield it from any potential threats. While all eight species of pangolin are in danger of extinction due to illegal trafficking, there is reason for hope.
