Spurred by the end of the Cultural Revolution, Wu Guanzhong painted ‘Lotus Flowers (I)’ in the late 1970s, during an outpouring of creative energy and a period of high productivity. One of the very few large-scale oil paintings that Wu painted for himself, rather than on commission, it depicts a mid-summer scene of lotuses in full vitality. A single, radiantly blooming flower stands proudly in the middle of the composition, revealing its beautiful petals and fecund stamen. A traditional Chinese symbol for moral uprightness, the central lotus may have been intended to serve as an oblique self-portrait by an artist who was true to himself throughout his life. On view at the #HongKong Convention and Exhibition Centre from tomorrow, the painting will be offered in our Modern Art Evening Sale in on 31 March. #SothebysHongKong
