Depicting nine kinds of fish swimming among algae, accompanied by shrimps, clams and toads, this rare ink-and-colour painting was produced by Yu Xing, a court painter from the Qing dynasty. Emperor Qianlong’s poetic inscription in the body of the work corresponds perfectly to the Yu Xing’s vivid depiction of fish full of character. Stamped with the Emperor’s imperial seals, it was originally kept in the Forbidden City.
