A prominent figure who sought to establish a broader African aesthetic in Europe and America, Ngwenya’s oeuvre was intimately connected with his politics, reflecting the socio-political conditions of #Mozambique on the path to independence and during the civil war.

Abounding in blue, green and aquamarine, the work is titled ‘Esperando da Paz’ (Waiting for Peace), and dates to 1995. It was created during Mozambique’s International Trade Show FACIM, and is signed on the reverse by country officials including former President #JoaquimChissano, who was instrumental in negotiating Mozambique's independence from Portugal and served as the independent nation's first Minister of Foreign Affairs.
