Sixty-four years after the Eiffel Tower was unveiled in Paris to mark the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair, photographer Marc Riboud bravely scaled its armature with his Leica camera in hand and serendipitously captured a painter touching up the magnificent structure. Jauntily wielding his brush, the tradesman danced on one of the distinctive x-shaped crossbeams as if he were Fred Astaire himself. This famous image, first published in Life magazine in 1953 shortly before Riboud joined Magnum Photos, will be offered in our Photographs auction in New York on 5 April. Exhibitions are free and open to the public beginning 29 March. #SothebysPhotographs #EiffelTower #Paris #NewYork
