This image of the partially inflated King Kong balloon hanging off the Empire State Building was photographed by #nytimes staffer #SaraKrulwich in 1983. The balloon was set up to promote the anniversary of “King Kong.” Shooting the ape is an experience Sara remembers vividly. “Renting helicopter time was expensive, so The Times had agreed to share the ride with The Daily News, and we had planned to go up sometime in the late morning after the King Kong was completely inflated,” she told us recently. “As I walked into work at 8 a.m., we got a frantic call from The Daily News saying that King Kong wasn’t getting larger and that it seemed to be deflating, so we decided we had to go up right away. We really only had a short time before Kong just looked like a large pile of empty garbage bags. When we got up in the air, we circled around the Empire State Building a few times, I shot that picture and that was it. Because the stunt was such a failure, the picture landed on page one.” In 1994, Sara became the first culture staff photographer and, in the years since, has become renowned for her work in the #theater and the arts.
