Rakhine State, Myanmar has become a global byword for ethnic cleansing. In 2017, members of Myanmar’s Buddhist majority carried out the mass expulsion of the Muslim Rohingya ethnic group, an act that @unitednations officials called genocide. But not all the violence has been directed at Rohingya Muslims. The Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group says it’s also been persecuted. In Sittwe, Rakhine’s capital, resentment festers. The ethnic Rakhine stress their own persecution, which they feel has been ignored amid a global hand-wringing over the Rohingya exodus. Visit the link in our profile to read the full report by #nytimes Southeast Asia bureau chief Hannah Beech. @minzayar_oo shot these photos of an ethnic Rakhine man in Mrauk U, Rakhine State, Myanmar; a seaside scene in Sittwe; an ethnic Rakhine girl in Sittwe; and a memorial ceremony in Sittwe for Sayadaw U Ottama, an ethnic Rakhine leader.
