In Dakar’s streets, working out is a way of life. But air pollution is spoiling the rush. With every breath, these exercisers are inhaling air that the World Health Organization considers dangerous. Sometimes it can appear deceptively clear. Other times it can feel like walking through a cloud of chalk dust, inside an oven. And there are signs it’s getting worse. Dakar is growing, with more people, more trash and more pollution. Garbage is piling up outside the city at a dump where it is often burned. Then there are the dust storms. Senegalese officials say they are trying to improve conditions. A new city north of Dakar is rising to relieve congestion and the government banned some of the most polluting buses.
