Welcome to Ontario, Canada, where nature sculpts beauty from wind, waves and cold. Every year, @nytimestravel releases a list of 52 places to go. This year, our traveler @sebmodak is going to all 52 destinations. For stop number 4, he visited the ice caves in Ontario, sculptured by Lake Superior, which are on our list for a disheartening reason. Like many phenomenon dependent on ice, cold and weather patterns, the caves are under threat from climate change. “To see them now, before they’re gone, felt like an immense privilege,” writes Sebastian. But searching for the ice caves is a travel experience that is increasingly rare — and dangerous. There are no signs and Sebastian didn’t find any organized tours. Instead, he buddied up with a photographer and set out on a hunt. Sebastian shot this photo in Ontario at Coppermine Point, an hour north of Sault Ste Marie.
