The cutest animal on Instagram is probably in your trash can. Meet Starfish, a Virginia opossum with nearly a quarter-million followers on @facebook and @Instagram combined. Ally Burguieres, a certified wildlife rehabilitator and Starfish’s caretaker, often uses the Instagram to promote animal rights. Inside Junkman’s Daughter, a novelty shop in Atlanta, a few hundred fans lined up to meet Starfish (@itsmesesame). Lee Yarbrough, who had arrived early to the event, suspects opossums and their vermin brethren are headed in the same direction as llamas, toward mass appeal. And why not? “They’re just pointy kitties.” Lee may be on to something. Starfish isn’t the only “verminfluencer.” There’s also @gizmo_the_skunk and @rocketdaraccoon.
