An imposing masterpiece from Francis #Picabia’s Transparences series, Mélibée was painted in 1931, inspired by #classical #literature and the Italian #Renaissance. The origin of the title can be found in poet #Virgil’s #Latin epic the Eclogues, and the unfortunate story of a man who was forced into exile. However, the monumental face borrows its features from 15th century #Italian #painter Piero della Francesca’s depiction of #Madonna. Part of the extraordinary #collection of Marianne and Pierre Nahon, this enigmatic #painting will be offered at #auction in #Paris on 19 March.
