Rendered with captivating intensity and a remarkable tenderness, this rare and early painting by Lucian Freud will appear at auction for the first time as a highlight of London’s Contemporary Art Evening sale on March 5. The mesmeric portrait bespeaks the lifelong friendship between Freud and the sitter, the extraordinary late Guinness heir Hon. Garech Browne.

Titled ‘Head of a Boy’, the portrait was painted in 1956 while Freud was staying at the legendary Guinness family estate in Ireland. A magnificent lodge set in an enchanting Irish valley, #Luggala was a dazzling and wild social melting pot unlike any other. Speaking of all of the many luminaries who frequented the house, from The Rolling Stones to Francis Bacon, Garech proclaimed “the person from whom I learned most was Lucian Freud”.
