Officials have estimated that there are 50,000 street vendors in #LosAngeles. Before 2018, the city had been debating their legalization for years. But in September, then-California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill decriminalizing street vending across the state. The LA City Council voted to legalize the practice a couple of months later. Selling on the city’s sidewalks is often the first profession for newly arrived immigrants. On the streets, many have faced crackdowns by the police and immigration agents. The legalization of street vending, for them, means dignity and security. “The only people who acknowledged us were the people who wanted to eat the food of their country,” said Caridad Vasquez, who arrived in LA a quarter-century ago and is seen in the first photograph. After a police crackdown in her area in 2008, Caridad became an activist pushing for legalization. For her, legalization is an acknowledgement of the contributions of immigrants to the life of LA. “Our city is Latino and we bring our cultures with us from other countries,” she said. @jessapons shot these photos of street vendors in LA.
