“I feel like a translator between the human and the dog.” Royah Nuñez loved animals from a young age. After she graduated from high school, though, she went to work as a dispatcher. While keeping her dream of working with animals on the side, Royah was also guarding a secret. “I was hiding in the closet forever,” she said. After her father discovered Royah kissing her girlfriend, Royah left home, slept at hotels, friends’ houses or outside if she had to. In the meantime, she lost her job, so she decided to follow her passion for animals. “I thought, ‘I’m already at rock bottom, I might as well try to go for it now, there’s nothing I can lose.’” She updated her job profile on Indeed and got a hit from a #dog obedience company. The job came with training and access to a car. Now she trains dogs for a Connecticut-based company. Royah’s story is just one of many highlighted in our Neediest Cases Fund, our annual campaign to provide direct assistance to those who are facing tough times.
