These computer boards, shot by @darosulakauri, are used to mine the #cryptocurrency #Bitcoin in the former Soviet republic of #Georgia. There, the currency has created a virtual gold rush. Even as the currency has tumbled in value, thousands of Georgians have jumped into the game and sold cars — even cows — to buy high-powered computers to mine #Bitcoin and join what has become a state-supported dash toward becoming a digital data leader. In 2015, a former prime minister encouraged Bitfury, a blockchain company then based in San Francisco, to set up a Bitcoin mining center in Tbilisi, Georgia, with a $10 million loan. The efforts have given Georgia, with 3.7 million people, a dubious distinction. It’s now an energy guzzler, with nearly 10% of its energy output gone into the currency endeavor.
