On Wednesday, the 35-year-old Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared himself the country’s president, the United States recognized him as the legitimate head of state, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered American diplomats out of the country and tens of thousands of people were drawn to the streets of #Caracas in a largely anti-government protest. Today, the streets were calm and the leader of Venezuela’s armed forces declared loyalty to Maduro, saying the opposition’s effort to replace him with a transitional government amounted to an attempted coup. The crisis in Venezuela is years in the making, and our reporters have covered it throughout. Visit the link in our profile to read a guide to that coverage as well as a short, simple primer on what’s happening in #Venezuela. @meridithkohut shot this photo of a defaced mural of President Nicolás #Maduro in the center of Caracas.
