This ‘mourning ring’ was owned and worn by the Marquis de Lafeyette in memory of his “adopted father”, George Washington. It features an engraved oval portrait of the late president that was accomplished by Saint-Mémin in 1800. The mourning ring comes to auction tomorrow in our New York salesroom as part of a group of nine artifacts that have descended through the family of Lafayette’s granddaughter to the present owners – including gifts presented to the beloved French aristocrat and military officer during his triumphant farewell tour of America from 1824-25. #SothebysBooks
