Egon #Schiele’s untimely death in 1918, at the tender age of 28, left so much unsaid. Painted in 1912, this thoroughly modernist depiction of a #fishing #boat in #Trieste was created in the aftermath of arguably the most tumultuous experience in the artist’s life. Released from a brief period of wrongful incarceration after his #bohemian lifestyle scandalised the community in the small country town he had moved to near #Vienna, Schiele turned to Trieste as an escape, hoping to relive the fond memories of previous visits. Adopting a radical square format, a vertiginous, closely-cropped perspective and bright patches of pure colour, this work demonstrates the artist’s pivotal role within the melting pot of European avant-garde painting, at a time when iconoclastic developments were forever altering the direction of Western art. Having remained in a private collection since 1962, this unique work will be offered as part of our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in #London next month. #SothebysImpMod
