French avant-garde painter Francis Picabia was born #OnThisDay in 1879. Rich in imagery and historical references, mysterious in mood and delicate in execution, Atrata (circa 1929) is one of the most stunning examples of the artist’s Transparences. Drawing on natural phenomena, #antique #sculpture, #Romanesque #frescos, #Renaissance painting and #Catalan art, #Picabia creates an image of timeless and enigmatic beauty. Spanning almost the entire height of the panel, the central figure of #Atlas holding a #globe on his shoulders was based on the #Roman #marble of the Greek #mythological figure, whilst the prominent face and hands echo #Botticelli. Having last been offered at #auction in #Paris in 1974, Atrata has remained in the same private #collection for over forty years. On view in our #London galleries from Wednesday 20 February.
