The federal government shutdown is turning off the tap for many craft brewers.⠀

The makers of beers from @samueladamsbeer to @sierranevada say they are sitting on suds they can’t bottle and sell—or are holding off on production of new beers—because they don’t have federal approval for some of their new labels or formulas. The incapacitation has been particularly painful for craft brewers, which rely heavily on frequent releases to drive sales.⠀

"The only thing we can do is drown our sorrows," said Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch, whose company makes Sam Adams, estimating that tens of millions of dollars of sales could be lost across the craft beer industry. "That number goes up every day the shutdown continues."⠀

Industry officials expect the pain to be much greater than during the last prolonged government shutdown. There are now more than 7,000 craft brewers operating in the U.S., up from about 2,900 in 2013, according to the @brewersassoc.⠀
