Amazon's latest distribution point is a closet-size store in the Indian countryside, where thousands of mom-and-pop shops take and deliver packages to millions of new online shoppers.⠀

The country's rural backwaters are home to more than 800 million people. Most are new to online shopping and often don't have smartphones, credit cards or even delivery addresses. What they do have is money to spend, which @Amazon is happy to accept in cash on delivery.⠀

In an effort to reinvent itself, the retail giant — which on Monday surpassed Microsoft to claim the crown of world's most valuable public company — has added hundreds of thousands of Indian language descriptions of products and videos for those who can’t read, while opening physical stores to walk people through the process of ordering online.⠀
