Packed gyms in early January have become a sort of annual cliché, as the suddenly health-conscious resolve to get fit in the new year. For Pauline Horn, powerlifting has become an addiction—at the age of 76. ⠀
⠀
Suffering from a torn meniscus and two arthritic knees nearly three years ago, Ms. Horn's physical therapist introduced her to the @baltimorekettlebellclub, where she got hooked on learning proper weightlifting techniques. The retiree is one of a handful of women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who train at the gym, with other members calling them the Golden Girls.⠀
⠀
Last year, Ms. Horn entered a local powerlifting competition and broke three state records with a deadlift of 170 pounds, a bench press of 77 pounds and an 82-pound squat. In September, she competed in the @usapowerlifting Bench Nationals in Scranton, Pa.⠀
⠀
"I was the only one in my age group, so I won by default," she says. "You just have to outlast everybody else and you're a winner."⠀
