Gold-flaked pizzas and gold-injected soups, gold-dusted french fries and chicken nuggets, and gold-infused Bloody Marys and cappuccinos. An edible-gold arms race is ramping up in the United Arab Emirates, and it isn't always a pretty sight.⠀

A tired, one-off food gimmick elsewhere has been taken to the extreme in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, its two biggest cities, where social media platforms like Instagram fuel a gastronomic gilded age. ⠀

As long as it is relatively pure, 23 or 24 karats, gold has no taste and is nutritionally neutral, restaurants say. Instead, it's about giving visitors an extravagant memento of their trip to one of the world's hubs of luxury travel.⠀

With hefty price tags, some say these upscale treats are often messy letdowns—with complaints over the lack of flavor to gold stuck in diners' teeth.⠀
