As medical use of marijuana grows globally, hemp shop owners Christa Pappa and her husband are hoping that Greece, dubbed "the European California," could be one of the biggest winners in the European legalization trend.⠀

In her view and that of more entrepreneurs and investors, there's a boom in the growing and selling of legal cannabis in Europe. Greece, which is slowly emerging from a decadelong financial crisis, just issued the first two licenses to private companies to grow cannabis and is set to grant 12 more this month. The first licenses will facilitate an initial €185 million in investment, which could reach €1 billion in the next three years, government officials said.⠀

Southern European countries with plentiful sunshine and mild winters, such as Greece, make an ideal place for cannabis cultivation. While no European countries plan to legalize production for recreational purposes, investors and businesses estimate that Europe's medical-marijuana market could exceed €50 billion in annual sales.⠀
