In the summer of 2008 @tommycaldwell and I were staying in the heart of Cape Town in a busy backpackers hostel. We were halfway through a weeklong rainstorm, letting our skin and muscles rest from the sandstone paradise of Rocklands. From the outside, we were living up to our "First Couple of Climbing" title perfectly. We were both riding career highs (I had just completed Meltdown and he had just freed Magic Mushroom in a day) and traveling with some of our best friends and climbing's elite. But inside, we were grappling with our darkest time yet, the beginning to the end of our relationship. Tommy walked down to the kitchen one morning and sat next to me. It was weird to feel his presence and be reminded of a stranger instead of my best friend. He put his hand on my leg and handed me this sugar packet "When you forgive someone, the knots are untied and the past is released." The pit in my stomach lessened. I put my head on his shoulder and felt at home. Things got a lot worse before they eventually got better, as anyone knows who has gone through a divorce. It's been ten years since we sat in Cape Town together but I've carried this sugar packet with me ever since. Two months ago when we were evacuated from our home in Yosemite due to the Ferguson Fire it was dizzying to think of what to try and save. At first all I thought was "Randy, Theo and Bodie are safe, everything else is material," and in reality, that's all that matters. But when given the luxury of taking some things, this sugar packet was the first thing I thought of. It's survived me flooding the house, many moves and now a fire. Last week we moved back home after nearly two months. The house was covered in ash and the inside smelled like a campfire. I unpacked the suitcases and saw this on top, a few more wrinkles on the packaging than before. I put it back up on the fridge where it had come from. It’s a small reminder that even in the hardest of times, there’s room for gratitude.
