In 2001 there was an international climbing conference held in Innsbruck to discuss ethics, regulations and rules in climbing, alpinism and mountaineering. All the greats were there: @reinholdmessner_official @huberbuam_official @leo_houlding ... the list too long to write down. The American representation consisted of myself, @tommycaldwell , @peter_b_croft and the legendary Tom Frost. I felt completely out of place, just barely coming onto the world climbing stage, but it was fascinating none the less to listen to people passionately discuss and debate climbing and all of its forms. The first morning I stumbled downstairs to the hotel restaurant and grabbed a bowl of muesli and quietly slipped into the safety of the booth where Tom was finishing up breakfast. He looked me in the eyes, his vibrant white hair and huge smile never leaving his face and said “Beth, thank you for sitting with me, I thought I’d have to make small talk with some of these crusty old guys.” Years later he would sit with an empathetic and understanding ear during my divorce, having been through a similar experience. He went out of his way to connect with you on a level beyond climbing. Tom’s humility and genuine personality was rare. His historic accomplishments and mark on Yosemite climbing could have warranted a much more hardline approach. But his jovial, gentle and sincere nature never left him. Now, in an age where it sometimes feels like marketing overshadows accomplishment, it was always refreshing to sit and hear the stories from Tom, his motivations behind their great ascents. He was a rare gem and will be missed by so many. #tomfrost
