Last week we finally made it back to this place we call home after the Ferguson Fire. The smoke cleared enough for our annual family circus camping trip to the high country of Tuolumne. It started four years ago, when Theo was barely able to walk and I was barely able to keep my eyes open from the sleep deprivation that accompanies the first years of parenthood. We convinced ourselves that it was a fun, bonding experience and have returned each summer. This year, my good friend Nora suggested running Clouds Rest for our no kids, mom day adventure. I joked that we should just sit by the lake in silence and at the end of the day rub some dirt on our legs and faces and call it good. But Clouds Rest was a place I had never been in Yosemite and it’s supposed to be spectacular, making the 15 mile round trip mission seem slightly more enticing for a fair-weather weekend jogger like me. We talked about our boys, work and travel, but mostly we just plodded along listening to each other’s footsteps and soaking in the quiet soundtrack of the high country. The views were stunning, perhaps the finest I’ve seen in the park. But the best thing about standing on the summit wasn’t just the view, but also the feeling I had inside. The pace inside me slowed and my inner dialogue quieted. I had forgotten that the mountains provide a calm stillness that allows me to stop and really soak in what is in front of me. And no matter how long I am gone or how often I am here, that gift is always there. A week later my feet are still sore, a nice reminder that there are always things to explore in life, whether it’s a new trail and summit or the nooks and crannies inside of yourself. Thanks @snoras for the ? and the motivation ? I’m glad we didn’t just sit by the lake ???
